Holidays on Fridays or Mondays make for great long weekends. Add another day of leave, and they’re the stuff that dreams are made of for any corporate slave hanging on the 20 day vacation a year rule. The itch to travel is strong. Take off to Goa maybe? Or cool off in Ooty?
But the reasons you should travel on long weekends are the exact reasons you should not.
Sometimes greatest things are discovered by accident. Having just about 5 days on hand, and having covered most of the weekend getaways in this part of the country, we might as well have rolled a dice. The outcome was an impromptu trip to Kochi, a major city in Kerala, about 600kms south of Bangalore, and later another shortish detour to Varkala, Kerala’s Goa.
For a dose of South Indian heritage, and an architectural marvel in all its lost glory, do visit the Badami Caves, but just for a day or two.
Chances are, you haven’t heard of Araku Valley. Tucked away on the eastern edge of the state of Andhra Pradesh, is this little quaint hill station (elevated about 900 mts ~) in the Vishakhapatnam (Vizag) district, famous for its coffee plantations and home to a large number of South Indian Tribals.
A recent work trip for a team building activity landed me in Goa. Not only was this the 6th trip to the coastal state but also the most luxurious. So one stayed at the uber-posh Alila Diwa resort, chilled in the infinity pool, while kicking back with a mean cocktail and a Napolean pasta. However, 3 days of the pomp and I was done with it and needed a real vacation. So, we sneaked off to Gokarna- Goa’s lesser-known (thankfully), less touristy but prettier neighbour in Karnataka.
Where else in India could you bike to a beach one minute and feel like being in a quaint European Village the next?
There’s something about Pondicherry. A small beach town tucked away at the southeast coast of India, which was once a French colony as can be seen from its architecture and local influences.
It’s not everyday that you end up thousands of miles away from your base on a random weekend trip without taking a single flight (but everything else), but so it happened and how. When you’re with someone for the first time, the excitement to do new things is intense, and the need to connect strong. Our first trip together as a couple ended up being the symbols of love and erotica at the Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh, the heart of India.
From housing some of the world’s top corporations to the biggest bungalows you’ll see, and yet being home to a rich, royal, glorious past, Hyderabad is the perfect symbol of modernity interspersed with history and heritage. While not a conventional choice for most travelling to or around India, Hyderabad manages to surprise and enthrall most everyone who visits and is probably one of the best hidden treasures in the country. It’s not for nothing that Hyderabad was included as one of the “Top cities to visit in 2013” in Lonely Planet.
There cannot be a traveller who comes to India and does not want to and/or does not go to visit the Taj Mahal. And fair enough, it’s not...
